Ray Kaler was born in a small town in Iowa. Interested in Art at an early age, as a child he drew household pets with aid from the Walter Foster series of drawing books.
In 1981 Ray received a BA in Art from a small liberal Arts College in Iowa. Unable to find work in the Art field upon graduation, and a desire to travel, he enlisted in the military and spent 10 years in Germany. Even during military enlistment stateside and abroad he still continued to draw by attending Figure Drawing Guilds in Washington and Germany. After many years working in the Military and Technical fields he found the time to explore his desire to learn oil painting.
2005-2009, Ray painted under tutelage from Ted Pankowski through ARTS UMBRELLA in Bothell, Washington. Ray has exhibited in previous EAFA shows, the Bellevue Strawberry Festival and at the Bothell ARTSLive Festival.
April 2006 attended workshop with renowned California painter John Budicin and in 2009 attended a workshop by renowned painter Susan Diehl.
Inspired by works from the Impressionists, Edgar Payne and Trevor Chamberlain.
Ray enjoys working outside creating small oil studies. Painting outside a connection between the painter and the scene develops. Senses take in everything of the moment, sounds, smells, temperature, lighting effects, shadow shapes and reflections. A mood is present and his objective is to transpose the mood of the landscape onto canvass.
Rays favorite subjects to paint are landscapes, coastal and marine scenes.
Other interests include snowboarding, walking the dogs and playing the violin-cello.
